SUBSTATION CONTROL UNIT

The UCS Substation Control Unit handles the control and general coordination functions within the Integrated Protection and Control System SIPC.
The main functions of the UCS include:

  • Communication with UCLs.
  • Communication with Local Operating Consoles.
  • Communication with Telecontrol.
  • Communication with Incidence Analysis and Maintenance Centres
  • Remote configuration (Teleload).
  • Time sinchronization.
  • Automation functions.
  • Redundancy.

Nowadays we offer two different hardware solutions for the UCS:

  • UCS IB: For serial communication
  • UCS IH: For serial and/or ethernet communication

Communication with UCL´s
  • The UCS acts as the centralized collection point for information from the various UCL´s (events, alarms, measurements and metering), and sends them the orders issued from the consoles, the telecontrol or the central automation functions.
  • The occurrence time of events and alarms is fixed by the UCL´s and communicated to the UCS, where it is saved pending onward transmission to the consoles or telecontrol.

Communication with Local Operating Consoles
  • The UCS has 5 channels for connecting up to local operating consoles. Each console has independent processing, and enables synoptics or alarms pages to be displayed or orders to be executed simultaneously with other consoles
  • Each Console asks the UCS for the information it needs to process statuses, events alarms, measurements and counts, and at the operators request sends commands to the different UCL´s.

Communication with Telecontrol
  • The UCS has up to 3 slots for connection with different central telecontrol stations, each with a different protocol, and with the option of redundant connection.
  • The information to be sent to each of these central stations may be configured.

Communication with Incidence Analysis and Maintenance Centres
  • One of the 5 possible consoles allowed by the UCS may connect remotely via switched telephone network.
  • This means that all substation information may be viewed or any substation command executed through this remote console.
  • As this console communicates with all substation equipment, it may be used for both maintenance and incident analysis. In the latter case, it can access all the substation protections either to receive the information contained in them (event, status, fault reports, oscillographs, settings) or to send modifications to settings.

Remote configuration (Teleload)
A remote connection (Switched telephone network) may be used to load the configuration for the local console, UCS and all the UCL´s.

Time sinchronization
The UCS is equipped with a clock that has milliseconds resolution an may be synchronized externally by:
  • GPS clock
  • One of the telecontrol protocols
  • A local or remote console

Automation functions
The UCS governs the overall substation automation functions, collecting all the information it needs from the different UCL´s and sending the commands resulting from the automation function to the corresponding UCL´s.

Redundancy

The SIPC has various levels of redundancy to suit the importance of the installation. It is possible to duplicate the UCS power supply, the UCS itself and the channels used to communicate with the UCL´s, so that the failure of one of the redundant elements does not affect the working of the SIPC, the fault in question being notified at the same time.
